Anthony Steffes -  Mixed Media Artist

As an experimental artist I am interested in playing with mediums, found objects, and just about anything that has pattern or texture to develop layered pieces that challenge the imagination of the viewer. Inspiration begins with objects and materials that I must possess. My art process involves purposely creating difficulties, confusing myself and avoiding anything that I can easily control, exactly the opposite of the way I choose to live. Visual references from the performing arts, nature, the garden, and prior art experience, guide my creative process. My pieces intend to inspire fantasy, evoke memories, and tempt the viewer to indulge in something not easily defined.

Born in Beausejour, Manitoba, I have spent most of my life learning by teaching visual and performance arts to youth in Manitoba schools. Happiest when engaged in the process of helping someone do what they think they could not, I continue to develop programs for talented high school students, as well as offering adult workshops in composition, design, and the integrated arts experience. Formal art training includes the University of Manitoba, University of Toronto, Ontario College of Art, Forum Art Institute, and workshops across Canada and the United States with artists who have generously shared their art, knowledge and passion.

My work has been influenced by workshops with Nikola Bjelajac, Gerald Brommer, Brian Ateyo, Jeremy Mayne, Jonathan Talbot, Dory Kantor, Aliana Au, James Tan, Charlie Cia, Michele Jamison, Lynn Lawson Pajunen, and Lyla Belluk. Inspiration for new works comes from my teaching, playing with new mediums, workshops and life experiences.
